Five People Killed After Amazon Cargo Plane Runs Off Tarmac
National Transportation Safety Board Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy reported that five people were killed when an Amazon cargo aircraft ran off a runway at Miami International Airport, crashing into an SUV past airport limits and a van carrying seven cleaning company employees.
Homendy characterized Sunday’s scene as "utter devastation," though she provided no further details regarding the locations where victims were recovered or how many people were inside the SUV.
Surveying the path of the Boeing 767, Homendy noted tire tracks leading off the runway into the grass, ruined navigational gear, torn-up fencing, the demolished cleaning van, and the crushed SUV beyond the airport boundary.
Scattered debris across the site included vehicle air bags, equipment from both the ground vehicles and the aircraft, airport apparatus, and "fencing everywhere," according to Homendy.
“It’s pretty extensive. Hard to see and I’m sure it must have been very difficult for the responders as well,” Homendy said.
