National Mall Shooting Puts White House on Lockdown
A National Mall shooting put the White House on lockdown on Monday, prompting Secret Service to evacuate media members from the north lawn and huddle them up in the press briefing room. Roads also closed for several hours.
The incident began as JD Vance’s motorcade drove past the Washington Monument at around 3:45. Secret Service officers spotted “a suspicious individual that appeared to have a firearm,” approached him, and quickly came under fire. One of the shots hit a child, who did not suffer life-threatening injuries. Agents fired back and hit the shooter, who wound up hospitalized.
Officials do not know whether the shooter intended to target Donald Trump, but given the president survived an assassination attempt less than two weeks ago, it is reasonable to guess that harming him may have been the goal.
