Joy Reid Gets Her Wish: Team USA Loses
Team USA lost its Round of 16 World Cup match on Monday, falling to Belgium 4-1. The defeat ended the club’s hopes of winning the tournament and doubtlessly disappointed most Americans. But not Joy Reid.
The former MSNBC anchor hosted a guest on her podcast last week who said he wanted the U.S. to lose so our country would “get knocked down a peg” to prevent a victory from being “exploited” by Donald Trump, whatever that means. Reid nodded in approval and declared that she was rooting for an African team to win after the guest, sports editor Dave Zirin, made his comment.
“I’m rooting for the African teams. I want one of them to win. I think it would be so great for the Global South for an African team to take home the big prize,” she fantasized. “And I am sorry, not sorry, but I really want that to happen.”
Egypt and Morocco are the only two African countries remaining in the tournament. If your local bar erupts in cheers after either team scores a goal in their upcoming matches, it is probably because of Reid.
