The United States has imprisoned alleged 9/11 plotter Khalid Sheikh Mohammed in Guantanamo Bay since 2006. After two decades in his cell, he finally has a trial date.

A military judge ruled on Wednesday that Mohammed and three other accused terrorists will stand trial in 2028, ending a prolonged scheduling process that has dragged on for years. Past trial dates have come and gone several times, but no U.S. court has ever formally convicted or acquitted the quartet of alleged plotters. Three of them agreed to plea deals with the Biden administration in 2024 that spared them from the death penalty in exchange for their admissions of guilt.

This story should strike all Americans as good news. If you care about 9/11’s victims, then you doubtlessly want justice. If you care about due process and the Constitution, then these trials are necessary no matter how heinous the hijackings were. Anyone who thinks Mohammed should not get his day in court likely has something to hide.
